xID provides merchants with identification of end-users via device detection at a basic level-of-assurance (LoA) corresponding to LoA2.

The xID Service is currently in proof-of-concept for evaluation purposes and shall not be used for commercial applications.

The xID Service is supplementary to BankID and is based on previous use of BankID from the end-user device. Hence, end-users need to be users of BankID in order to get access to the xID Service. Merchants may on the other hand use the xID Service without using the BankID Service. The service (optionally) includes step-up to BankID if the end-user cannot be determined via device detection.

The xID Service is available for merchants as an IDP-option in the OpenID Connect Provider from BankID Norge.

See availability and access for the OIDC Provider in its xID pilot configuration for instructions on how to register at merchant application for the xID Service.

Example/demo web applications (ie. BankID OIDC Clients), with corresponding source code on GitHub, are available to start exploring the BankID OIDC Service.
